Despite
the cold and rain, the Run Free, Run Jozi, a night 10km run in the Johannesburg
CBD on Wednesday night, Human Rights Day attracted ten thousand runners. The
run was put together by Nike-SA, as initiatives to celebrate Human Right’s Day
and take in charge of the Johannesburg CBD.
Kick-starting exactly at 7pm, from the
Mandela Bridge, running through the CBD, passing the City Hall, to the Civic
Centre in Bramfontein the runners where
throughout the race cheered by scores of people, blowing vuvuzelas, while others
sang African songs. Each participant were given goodie bags, with Nike t-shirts,
wristbands and shoe laces, this to give the run a sense of togetherness. Some
runners had their nicknames on the back of their t-shirts. While others had
their attention on fishing first, some of the runners took part for the fun of
it and were quoted as saying, the aim was to experiment the Johannesburg CBD at
night.
At the finish line, in New Town the
runners where welcomed with live music, camera’s flashing throughout to capture
the happy moments.
